Sabarmati Report Declared Tax-Free in Madhya Pradesh: A Glimpse into the 2002 Godhra Tragedy
MP Chief Minister Mohan Yadav encourages widespread viewing of the film, praising its portrayal of historical truths and addressing political controversies.
The Madhya Pradesh government has declared The Sabarmati Report, a film based on the 2002 Godhra train fire tragedy, tax-free in the state. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav made the announcement on Tuesday, expressing his plans to personally watch the movie and urging others to do the same. Directed by Dheeraj Sarna, the film stars Raashii Khanna, Ridhi Dogra, and Vikrant Massey, and delves into the events surrounding the Godhra train incident, which triggered widespread riots in Gujarat.
Speaking to reporters in Bhopal, CM Yadav described the film as a powerful depiction of a dark chapter in India’s history. “The Sabarmati Report is a very good movie. I will go to watch the movie myself. I also told my ministers, MLAs, and MPs to watch this film. We are going to make it tax-free in the state so that maximum people can watch it,” he said.
Yadav emphasized that the Godhra tragedy represented a painful period in the nation’s past. He highlighted the film’s potential to uncover hidden truths while lauding then-Gujarat Chief Minister and current Prime Minister Narendra Modi for maintaining the state’s and country’s dignity during the crisis. Yadav also accused opposition parties of exploiting the incident for political gain, calling it an act of “dirty politics.”
Prime Minister Modi echoed these sentiments on Sunday, addressing the film’s impact on social media platform X. Responding to a post praising The Sabarmati Report, he remarked, “A false narrative can only last for a short time.” The post commended the movie for shedding light on one of India’s most shameful recent events.
The decision to make the film tax-free in Madhya Pradesh underscores the state government’s encouragement for more people to engage with its narrative, positioning it as an essential reflection on a pivotal moment in Indian history.
