Marisa Abela Reflects on Intimate Scenes in “Industry”: Learning to Set Boundaries

The Actress Opens Up About Her Evolving Comfort with On-Screen Nudity and How She Now Advocates for Herself

After three seasons of filming the HBO drama Industry, Marisa Abela, who portrays Yasmin, has grown more cautious about how intimate scenes are portrayed. In a recent interview with The Times of London, Abela shared how her perspective has shifted since she began filming the show, where sex scenes are a frequent part of her character’s journey.

While Abela appreciates that Yasmin is confident in her sexuality, she now feels more empowered to voice her own comfort levels when shooting these scenes. “I don’t necessarily push back on the sex. I understand it’s part of the show,” Abela said. “I’m just more careful now about what is being shown.”

In the first two seasons, the Back to Black star says she wasn’t concerned about the nudity, as it aligned with Yasmin’s character. “It was part of who she is—someone who is very free and comfortable in her body. It didn’t carry much emotional weight for me then.”

However, as the series progressed, Abela became more mindful of the frequency and implications of filming intimate scenes repeatedly. She now feels comfortable asking for specific adjustments during filming, such as requesting certain camera angles. “I think now I’m more aware that I can say, ‘Do you mind staying on my back rather than coming around the front? You get the idea that I’m not wearing anything,’” she explained.

Abela was initially drawn to the role of Yasmin, a publishing heiress turned financial analyst, because the character’s confidence and power weren’t tied to traditional insecurities about her body. “Her flaws and insecurities aren’t about her sexuality or body—that’s where she draws her strength,” the Rogue Agent actress shared. “She is completely comfortable in her own skin, and that allows others to feel at ease around her.”

The third season of Industry, also starring Myha’la Herrold, Harry Lawtey, Ken Leung, and Sagar Radia, is currently streaming on HBO, with the series already renewed for a fourth season.
