Gemma Arterton Cautions Against Female James Bond
Actress fears straying from source material as debate over next 007 intensifies
Gemma Arterton, the BAFTA-nominated actress known for her role in Quantum of Solace, has expressed reservations about the idea of a female James Bond. While the ongoing debate about diversifying the iconic character continues to swirl, Arterton believes that adhering to the original vision is crucial.
“Isn’t a female James Bond like Mary Poppins being played by a man?” she questioned in an interview with The Times. “They talk about it, but I think people would find it too outrageous. Sometimes you just have to respect the tradition.”
Arterton’s comments come on the heels of Daniel Craig’s nonchalant attitude towards his successor. The former 007 famously declared that he “doesn’t care” who takes on the role next.
Meanwhile, franchise producer Barbara Broccoli faces a significant decision. While she has confirmed that the next Bond will be a man, she remains open to exploring diversity in casting. “Every time we cast a new actor, the films change,” she explained. “It’s the excitement of a new Bond, a new direction.”
As the search for the next 007 intensifies, the debate over the character’s future direction continues to captivate fans and industry insiders alike.
