From Snapshots to Super-Villains: Jimmy Olsen Takes Centre Stage in DC’s Bold New Spin-Off

DC Crime reimagines the familiar lensman from the 2025 Superman film as a true-crime investigator, with Season 1 focusing on the mysterious Gorilla Grodd.

DC Studios is taking a bold creative leap with its next project, DC Crime — a Max original spin-off centered around Superman’s longtime friend and Daily Planet photographer, Jimmy Olsen. Played by Skyler Gisondo, who first appeared in James Gunn’s Superman (2025), Jimmy will now step into the spotlight as both narrator and investigator in a docu-style true-crime series that explores the darker, stranger corners of the DC Universe.

Unlike traditional superhero stories, DC Crime will blend investigative journalism with metahuman mysteries, presenting a grounded, mockumentary-style take on the superhero world. The first season reportedly follows Olsen’s investigation into Gorilla Grodd — the telepathic, hyper-intelligent ape known for battling The Flash and occasionally crossing paths with Superman. The story will unfold through the lens of the Daily Planet newsroom, as Jimmy and his colleagues dig into the secrets surrounding Grodd’s rise.

The creative duo behind Netflix’s American Vandal, Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault, are developing the series as writers, executive producers, and showrunners. Known for their sharp wit and innovative storytelling, their involvement suggests a clever mix of humor, suspense, and grounded realism. DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran will also serve as executive producers, with Warner Bros. Television producing the show.

Early reports suggest DC Crime is expected to debut sometime after Superman’s release, likely in 2026 or 2027, as part of the first chapter of the newly rebooted DC Universe. The series marks a strategic shift for DC Studios — moving beyond the usual caped crusaders to explore secondary characters through genre-bending storytelling.

With DC Crime, the DCU promises a fresh, investigative edge — transforming Jimmy Olsen from Superman’s loyal sidekick into a truth-seeking journalist uncovering the murky underworld of metahuman crime.
