Emergency Finally Gets a Release Date: Kangana Ranaut’s Political Drama Set for January 2025
After Delays and Controversy, the Film on India’s Pivotal Moment Secures CBFC Certification and Green Light for Release.
Kangana Ranaut, actor and BJP MP, has officially announced that her much-anticipated film Emergency will hit theaters on January 17, 2025. This update comes over a month after the movie was granted a censor certificate by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Written, directed, and co-produced by Ranaut, the political drama sees her portraying former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi during one of India’s most tumultuous eras.
Initially slated for release on September 6, Emergency faced multiple delays before securing the CBFC’s approval. Ranaut revealed the new release date on Instagram with a post that read:
“17th January 2025 – The epic saga of the nation’s most powerful woman and the moment that altered India’s destiny. #Emergency – Unveils Only in cinemas on 17.01.2025!”
Actor Shreyas Talpade, who plays Atal Bihari Vajpayee in the film, shared his thoughts on the delays in an interview with NDTV. He expressed disappointment over the postponements, stating:
“It’s upsetting when a film is delayed after receiving censor board approval and initiating promotions. However, these delays are often beyond our control. Now that we have CBFC’s final approval, we are thrilled to finally bring this story to audiences.”
The film’s earlier release plans were marred by legal and cultural hurdles. In September, the Bombay High Court instructed the CBFC to address concerns raised by Sikh organizations regarding the film’s depiction of sensitive events. With these challenges now behind, Emergency is poised to be a major cinematic release in early 2025, promising to revisit a defining chapter in India’s history.
