Ananya Panday Defends Janhvi Kapoor’s Performance in Devara Amid Criticism: “Commercial Cinema Is Also an Art”
Amid backlash over Janhvi Kapoor’s role in Devara: Part 1, Ananya Panday praises her best friend’s dedication, highlighting the challenges of performing in commercial cinema
After delivering performances in films like Ulajh, Mili, and Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl, Janhvi Kapoor made her much-anticipated Telugu debut opposite Jr. NTR in Devara: Part 1. While the film has received mixed reactions, particularly about Janhvi’s limited screen time, her best friend Ananya Panday has come forward to defend her.
In a recent interview with Hindustan Times, Ananya opened up about the challenges actresses face in commercial cinema. She addressed the common misconception that commercial roles, often seen as involving just “3 scenes and 3 songs,” are easy. “People believe that doing commercial cinema is very easy, but it’s also an art to perform a certain way,” Ananya explained, referencing Janhvi’s efforts in Devara: Part 1.
The CTRL star, who has worked across both cinema and OTT platforms, praised Janhvi’s energy and expression, particularly in the song Daavudi from the Jr. NTR-led film. “Her expressions were great, and her energy was outstanding,” Ananya remarked, stressing that commercial cinema requires its own unique set of skills and effort.
Ananya’s comments come after some viewers voiced disappointment over Janhvi’s brief role in Devara: Part 1, where she played Thangam, the love interest of Varadha, one of Jr. NTR’s dual roles in the movie. Directed by Koratala Siva, the film also features Saif Ali Khan, Zarina Wahab, Prakash Raj, and Shruti Marathe, with Jr. NTR playing dual roles as Devara and his son Varadha.
Despite the criticism, Janhvi continues to build an impressive career. Starting with her 2018 debut in Shashank Khaitan’s Dhadak opposite Ishaan Khatter, she has since emerged as one of Bollywood’s most promising young stars. Her notable films include Good Luck Jerry, Bawaal, and Roohi. Next, she will reunite with her Bawaal co-star, Varun Dhawan, in Khaitan’s upcoming directorial Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, set for release in 2025.
Both actresses are making significant strides in their careers, showcasing their versatility across various platforms and genres.
