The first episode of season three of a much-anticipated series, The Witcher, brings us a lot of nostalgia.
A synopsis is important before we embark on our journey towards season three, so here is a synopsis for the season of “The Witcher”. As monarchs, mages, and beasts of the Continent compete to capture her, Geralt takes Ciri into hiding, determined to protect his newly-reunited family against those threatening to destroy it.
Entrusted with Ciri’s magical training, Yennefer leads them to the protected fortress of Aretuza, where they hope to uncover more about the girl’s untapped powers; instead, they discover they’ve landed in a battlefield of political corruption, dark magic, and betrayal. They must fight back, put everything on the line or risk losing each other forever.
The first episode opens up showing Geralt, played by Henry Cavil, Yennefer of Vengerbreg, played by Anya Chalotra, and Princess Cirilla of Cintra, played by Freya Allan, journey to the far reaches of the Continent in search of a haven. Hostile townsfolk and a cunning mage greet Geralt in the town of Blaviken. Ciri finds her royal world upended when Nilfgaard sets its sights on Cintra.
We have season 3, which is being split into two volumes and will mark the end of Cavill’s run as Geralt, and the show will continue with Liam Hemsworth in the lead role. The first volume doesn’t exactly get away from the epic story the show is trying to tell; there are still warring factions and magical forces and questions about the nature of the world itself, but it returns most of the focus where it belongs: on the main cast of Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer. More importantly, the show is fun again, where the big narrative beats don’t get in the way of all the blood and jokes
