Plot Overview:

Set in 1990, “The Monkey’s Drum” follows the unsettling discovery of a drum-playing monkey toy by twin brothers, Hal and Bill. Found in their late father’s closet, this eerie toy triggers a series of inexplicable deaths that haunt their family for years. Despite their efforts to discard the toy, fate ties them to its malevolent presence, leading to a chilling journey through familial trauma and supernatural intrigue.

Performance & Review:

Adapted from a Stephen King short story, “The Monkey’s Drum” benefits from Theary James’s compelling portrayal of both Hal and Bill. The film wastes no time plunging into its unsettling premise, employing intricate Rube Goldberg machines to heighten suspense and atmosphere.

While the film effectively explores themes of inherited trauma—blending emotional and supernatural elements—some aspects feel repetitive. However, Petey, Hal’s son, adds depth to the narrative, navigating the legacy of fear and fascination with the monkey.

Director Osgood Perkins deserves praise for maintaining a palpable sense of dread and crafting an intimate yet chilling portrayal of the brothers’ bond with the cursed toy. Despite leaving certain questions unanswered, this ambiguity adds to the film’s eerie charm, making it a compelling choice for fans of horror with a touch of dark humor.
