Rating: 4/5

Director Nithilan Swaminathan’s “Maharaja” is a slow burn that gradually immerses the audience into its world. Initially, the story takes its time to unfold, but once it gains momentum, it captivates viewers with unexpected twists and engaging plot developments. The film earns a solid 4 out of 5 rating for its overall execution.

Plot

“Maharaja” centers around Vijay Sethupathi’s character, who lives with his daughter, Jothi. One day, Maharaja files a police complaint about a missing item named ‘Lakshmi,’ which turns out to be a dustbin. This dustbin is significant to Maharaja as it once saved his daughter from an accident that claimed his wife’s life.

Initially mocked by the police, Maharaja’s case is taken seriously only after he offers a substantial bribe. The ensuing investigation reveals surprising truths and connections, making the second half of the film particularly compelling as the interwoven stories come to light.

Review

The story kicks off with Maharaja (Vijay Sethupathi) reporting the disappearance of ‘Lakshmi’ to the police. During this process, he encounters a thief named ‘Police,’ who is in custody. The film explores the lives of two fathers: Maharaja, who lost his wife when his daughter was young, and Abhirami (Anurag Kashyap), who enjoys a happy family life.

The narrative structure, filled with parallel storylines, keeps the audience guessing until the end. Although the first half may seem confusing due to the multiple plot threads, the film’s second half clarifies the connections and delivers an engaging experience. Despite some flaws, “Maharaja” maintains viewer interest throughout, thanks to its intriguing setup and effective storytelling.
