Zoya Akhtar Addresses Nepotism Allegations Surrounding “The Archies” Cast

In anticipation of her upcoming movie, “The Archies,” Zoya Akhtar opens up about the nepotism controversy engulfing the Netflix film. Responding to inquiries about casting star kids Suhana Khan, Khushi Kapoor, and Agastya Nanda, Akhtar dismisses claims of external pressure, asserting that her choices were not influenced by nepotism.

In an exclusive interview with Film Companion, Akhtar defends her casting decisions, emphasizing that she had the freedom to select any actor for the roles. She expresses fascination with the fact that despite seven kids being featured on “The Archies” poster, media attention predominantly focused on only three individuals. Akhtar criticizes the narrative surrounding nepotism, pointing out the overlooked four actors and lamenting the media’s failure to acknowledge their contributions.

Addressing the issue, Akhtar remarks, “What I find fascinating is there were seven kids on that (The Archies) poster. Netflix and Tiger Baby Productions put seven kids on that poster, and the media only spoke about three (Suhana Khan, Agastya, and Khushi). And then turns around and tells us about nepotism. Actually, you’re the one not giving the other four attention. You robbed their moment, and it’s heartbreaking to see. Who are you talking to? To us? We’ve put seven kids out there. You’ve just ignored four. And you took away their moment. So sorry. Your problem.”

Reema Kagti, also involved in the project, echoes Akhtar’s sentiments, emphasizing the unfair overshadowing of the other four talents featured in the film. She challenges critics, stating, “I have had a lot of people come up to me and say ‘You have cast these three star kids.’ But I say ‘There were seven kids on the trailer. Do you know the other four’s names? Did you bother to look at them?’ Because we are actually very excited about them. What happened actually was quite sad for the other four, and for the three (Suhana, Agastya, and Khushi).”

This statement sheds light on the broader context of the cast selection for “The Archies,” highlighting the overlooked contributors and challenging the prevalent narrative surrounding nepotism in the film industry.
