Yellowstone Season 5: Even the Cast is Kept in the Dark
Actors Reveal the Back Half of the Season is So Secretive, They Only Know Their Own Lines

The return of Yellowstone for the second half of season five is so tightly guarded that even the cast members themselves are in the dark about the full storyline. The stars revealed on Friday that they received heavily redacted scripts, where only their individual lines were visible, leaving them with no knowledge of what other characters were doing. This unique approach has led to real-time reactions from the actors as they filmed scenes for the upcoming episodes, which are currently in production in Montana and will air later this fall.
“This season has been extremely secretive,” shared Kelsey Asbille, who portrays Monica Dutton, in a new teaser video released by Paramount Network. The video features interviews with the main cast, including Kelly Reilly, Wes Bentley, Luke Grimes, and Cole Hauser. Kevin Costner, who portrayed patriarch John Dutton, exited the series before its final episodes, and how the show will address his character’s absence is still a well-kept secret.
As the lead-up to these highly anticipated episodes continues, the cast has largely remained silent about what’s in store for the Dutton family. Jen Landon, who plays ranch hand Teeter, described the intense security measures around the scripts: “Basically everything is blacked out except for your lines,” she explained, highlighting how even the actors are kept in suspense.
“It’s brought me to tears,” added Grimes, who plays Casey Dutton. “I think people are really going to love it.”
Dawn Olivieri, who plays Sarah Atwood, emphasized the level of secrecy, sharing that even she and her co-star Bentley (who plays Jamie Dutton) had no idea what the other’s character was doing. “I don’t know what she did, she doesn’t know what I did,” Olivieri said.
Director Christina Voros noted that the show has never operated like this before, calling it a new challenge seven years into the series. However, the decision to withhold key details was made to preserve the story for the audience, ensuring maximum impact when it airs. Denim Richards, who plays ranch hand Colby, added that many of the actors’ reactions were genuinely unrehearsed due to the secrecy.
The creative team has promised “tons of surprises” for fans, as the pressure builds around the Yellowstone phenomenon. Voros praised the cast for delivering some of their most powerful performances yet. “I have been more moved by the cast this season than I ever have been,” she said, as emotionally charged scenes of Reilly’s Beth Dutton, Bentley’s Jamie, Grimes’ Casey, and Hauser’s Rip Wheeler flashed across the screen.
Yellowstone tells the story of the Dutton family, owners of the largest contiguous cattle ranch in the U.S., and explores themes of shifting alliances, unresolved murders, and fierce battles for respect. With constant conflict between the ranch, a growing town, a Native American reservation, and America’s first national park, the stakes for the Duttons have never been higher.
