When Dreams Meet Reality: Huma Qureshi’s Unforgettable Experience Working with Rajinikanth

From Delhi to Dharavi — Huma Qureshi opens up about breaking language barriers and sharing screen space with the Superstar in Kaala

For almost every actor, working with the legendary Rajinikanth is a once-in-a-lifetime dream. For Huma Qureshi, that dream came true when she starred opposite the superstar in Pa Ranjith’s Kaala (2018), produced by Dhanush. The Bollywood actress played Zareena, a strong, complex character whose journey spans several decades in the film. Reflecting on her experience, Huma recalled being in awe of Rajinikanth’s simplicity and humility despite his unmatched stardom.

In a recent episode of Sit With Hitlist, Huma revisited that milestone moment, describing how she felt when Dhanush first called her for the project. “I thought Dhanush was calling me to act with him,” she said, laughing. “But then he told me, ‘No, it’s something even bigger.’ That’s when I realised I’d be working with Rajini Sir—and I just said, ‘Okay, done!’”

Huma spoke about how working in a Tamil film pushed her as an actor, especially since she grew up in Delhi with no background in the language. “For both the Tamil films I’ve done—with Ajith sir and Rajini sir—I sit with someone who’s fluent in the language and try to understand the scene’s intention,” she shared. “Once I grasp the emotion and rhythm, I look for natural pauses and stresses that fit my speaking style. Each actor interprets it differently.”

Acknowledging the extra effort required to perform in a language she doesn’t speak, Huma said, “It’s double the work, but it’s worth it. I memorise what I can, but if I can’t, I focus on the feeling. The intention has to be clear; the words don’t really matter.”

The actress also praised Rajinikanth’s professionalism and grace on set, describing him as “kind, disciplined, and unaffected by stardom.” She credits her experience on Kaala as one of the high points of her career, calling it both humbling and inspiring.

In recent months, Huma has also spoken candidly about industry challenges, including gatekeeping and ageism. She revealed how some people in the business still try to typecast or underestimate her because of her bold role choices. Yet, like her journey from Delhi to the Tamil film industry, Huma continues to break barriers and redefine what versatility in Indian cinema truly means.
