When Casting Dil Chahta Hai Almost Fell Apart: Farhan Akhtar’s 25-Year-Old Gamble That Changed Bollywood Forever
Farhan Akhtar reveals how Dil Chahta Hai’s iconic cast came together after rejections, rewrites, and an eight-month wait for Aamir Khan’s nod.

At just 25, Farhan Akhtar made his directorial debut with Dil Chahta Hai, a film that redefined how friendship was portrayed in Hindi cinema. But behind the effortless charm of its three leads — Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan, and Akshaye Khanna — was a story filled with near-misses, last-minute changes, and one young filmmaker’s sheer determination.
Farhan originally wanted to cast Hrithik Roshan, Abhishek Bachchan, and Akshaye Khanna in the lead roles, imagining three young actors embodying the spirit of the film. However, both Hrithik and Abhishek declined, leaving only Akshaye onboard. It was then that Farhan began to consider Aamir Khan — though he initially believed Aamir wouldn’t agree, as most leading men at the time avoided multi-starrer projects.
When Farhan finally approached him, Aamir was intrigued but skeptical. The director revealed that his first draft was written in English, and Aamir even suggested making the film in English. Farhan, however, reworked the script into Hindi and read it to him again. Still, Aamir asked for time — three months turned into eight, as he got busy with other projects. Farhan, growing impatient but determined, famously went to Aamir’s house and read the entire script to him through the video doorbell — a gesture that finally convinced Aamir of his commitment.
Aamir later told Javed Akhtar that it was good he hadn’t intervened to convince him earlier, explaining that he wanted to test whether Farhan truly believed in his vision enough to wait for him. That test of resolve worked — Aamir eventually said yes, and history was made.
But the challenges didn’t stop there. Just ten days before shooting, Saif Ali Khan called to say he was leaving the project for another film with a more “promising” love triangle. A shocked Farhan called an emergency meeting with his father Javed Akhtar, producer Ritesh Sidhwani, and Aamir Khan to salvage the situation. Aamir personally called Saif and told him he’d be making the biggest mistake of his career if he walked away. Thankfully, Saif changed his mind and stayed.
Another surprise came when Aamir and Akshaye Khanna switched roles — Aamir preferred to play the carefree Akash instead of the introspective Sid, and Akshaye gracefully agreed to the swap. Farhan called Akshaye’s gesture “rare and generous,” praising his professionalism.
In retrospect, every casting twist seems destined. Dil Chahta Hai not only became one of the most beloved coming-of-age films in Bollywood history but also ushered in a new era of storytelling — grounded, youthful, and unmistakably urban. With its fresh music, natural dialogue, and sleek visual style, it marked a cultural shift away from the love-triangle-driven cinema of the ’90s toward something more real and relatable.
And to think — it all began with a 25-year-old filmmaker who refused to give up on his vision.
