Vidya Balan’s Struggle with Cigarette Addiction
Exploring the Toll of Immersive Character Portrayals and the Road to Recovery

Renowned for her dynamic performances across various roles, Vidya Balan once confronted an unexpected hurdle – a bout with cigarette addiction. This unexpected turn was spurred by her portrayal of the iconic Silk Smitha in the cinematic masterpiece “The Dirty Picture.”
In a candid conversation on UNFILTERED by Samdish, Vidya disclosed her experience, stating, “I had dabbled in smoking prior to filming. I was familiar with the act, but it wasn’t a habit… you know how it goes. However, embodying a character demands authenticity. I couldn’t afford any reservations, especially given the societal perceptions surrounding female smokers, more prevalent back then.”
Reflecting on her subsequent descent into regular smoking post-The Dirty Picture, she confessed, “Following that project, I found myself hooked. I found myself lighting up 2-3 cigarettes a day.”
Arouba Kabir, an advocate for emotional and mental well-being and the founder of Enso Wellness, shed light on the immersive nature of actors in their roles. This deep dive into character portrayal often unearths emotional and psychological strains, potentially exacerbating existing issues.
Balan’s journey serves as a poignant reminder of the perilous grip of smoking. Despite cognizance of its health hazards, the initial allure and social context can ensnare even the most vigilant. Nevertheless, breaking free from this vice is a formidable yet gratifying pursuit. But first, comprehending the roots of addiction is imperative.
