After a year in development, “Top Gun 3” remains grounded as the creative team focuses on perfecting the script. Jay Ellis, who portrayed Lt. Reuben ‘Payback’ Fitch in “Top Gun: Maverick,” recently shared insights into the sequel’s progress.

“They’re still working on the script, aiming to get it right,” Ellis told Us Weekly. He emphasized that co-star and producer Tom Cruise is meticulous, ensuring the audience receives an immersive and entertaining experience.

Ehren Kruger, co-writer of “Maverick,” has returned to contribute to the screenplay. The team is committed to crafting a story that resonates, ensuring the sequel isn’t produced merely for the sake of continuation.

In January 2024, reports confirmed that “Top Gun 3” was in development at Paramount. The project is set to reunite Cruise with co-stars Miles Teller and Glen Powell, alongside producers Jerry Bruckheimer and David Ellison. Joe Kosinski, director of “Maverick,” is expected to return in a directorial or production capacity.

“Top Gun: Maverick” stands as the highest-grossing film of Cruise’s career, amassing $1.49 billion worldwide. The film secured an Academy Award for Best Sound and received six nominations, including Best Picture.

As fans eagerly await the next chapter, the dedication of the cast and crew to delivering a high-quality sequel underscores their commitment to the legacy of the “Top Gun” franchise.
