Ta-Nehisi Coates and J.J. Abrams’ Black Superman Film Still in Development

Renowned author Ta-Nehisi Coates and filmmaker J.J. Abrams’ highly anticipated Superman movie is confirmed to be progressing, according to recent statements from DC Studios. Despite leadership changes, with James Gunn and Peter Safran at the helm, the project remains on track since its initial announcement in 2021. Abrams is set to produce, and while plot details remain undisclosed, it is expected to feature the first Black Superman.

James Gunn clarified that Coates’ Superman and another project, Superman: Legacy, are unrelated and can coexist independently. He emphasized the excitement within the team, expressing openness to the project if it aligns with their vision. Coates, a respected author and scholar, previously contributed to Marvel comics with Black Panther and Captain America series.

The film is envisioned as an Elseworlds tale, akin to Joker, and will establish its own universe, much like Matt Reeves’ Batman outside of the DCU. Coates, known for his literary achievements, is also involved in adapting Rachel Aviv’s “Wrong Answer” into a feature film with Michael B. Jordan set to star and Ryan Coogler directing.

Superman: Legacy, the first film in Gunn and Safran’s DCU slate, stars David Corenswet as the iconic hero and is scheduled for release on July 12, 2025. Stay informed about upcoming DC movies and shows with our comprehensive list.
