Sydney Sweeney Takes on Role of Pioneering Boxer Christy Martin in Upcoming Biopic
Actress gears up to portray the groundbreaking boxer Christy Martin in a new biopic, promising a gripping tale of triumph and adversity

Sydney Sweeney, fresh from her success in romantic comedy “Anyone But You” and horror film “Immaculate,” is embarking on a new cinematic journey. Set to star in an untitled biopic, Sweeney will embody the trailblazing boxer Christy Martin, with the film set to make waves at the Cannes market, courtesy of Black Bear.
Under the direction of Australian filmmaker David Michôd, known for his gritty and raw storytelling in films like “Animal Kingdom” and “The King,” this project promises to delve into the true-life story of Martin’s ascent as America’s most prominent female boxer in the 1990s. Aptly dubbed the “female Rocky” by producers, Martin’s journey is one of unparalleled determination and resilience.
A naturally gifted athlete, Martin’s life took a dramatic turn in 1989 when she crossed paths with her manager and eventual husband, Jim Martin. Breaking gender barriers, she became the first woman to sign with legendary promoter Don King and graced the cover of Sports Illustrated, carving her place in history. Yet, behind her public persona lay a tumultuous tale of personal struggles, toxic relationships, and a harrowing brush with death.
For Sweeney, known for her roles in “Euphoria” and “White Lotus,” this role is a perfect fit, resonating with her own passion for boxing and mixed martial arts. Speaking to Deadline, Sweeney expressed her eagerness to delve into the physically and emotionally demanding role, citing Martin’s story as a powerful narrative of resilience and triumph over adversity.
Director Michôd echoed Sweeney’s sentiments, emphasizing Martin’s ferocious spirit and the compelling circumstances that drove her journey. With plans to commence filming in the fall across the U.S., the project is poised to captivate audiences with its exploration of Martin’s early life in conservative West Virginia, where boxing became her outlet for self-expression and defiance.
The script, penned by Mirrah Foulkes and Michôd, promises a nuanced portrayal of Martin’s struggles and triumphs, with the boxer herself collaborating closely with the filmmaking team. Producer Kerry Kohansky-Roberts likened Martin’s story to a modern-day Rocky, underscoring the groundbreaking impact of her achievements in a male-dominated sport.
With Sweeney’s transformative performance and Michôd’s directorial prowess, coupled with Black Bear’s financing and production support, the biopic of Christy Martin is poised to be a cinematic knockout, delivering a compelling narrative of courage, resilience, and the unyielding pursuit of dreams.
