Superman Reimagined: James Gunn Takes Flight with New Vision
Director Draws Inspiration from ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ and Explains the Man of Steel’s Iconic Costume

James Gunn, the celebrated filmmaker and co-chief of DC Studios, has lifted the veil on his highly-anticipated reboot of Superman. During a set visit earlier this year (via Gizmodo), Gunn shared intriguing details about the movie’s tone, influences, and the meticulous process behind designing Superman’s iconic costume. Starring David Corenswet as the titular hero, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, the film promises a fresh yet faithful take on the beloved superhero.
Gunn revealed that crafting aerial sequences—a hallmark of Superman’s adventures—posed a significant challenge. To overcome this, the team drew inspiration from Top Gun: Maverick, using innovative drone technology to capture breathtaking aerial action.
“We took a lot from films like Top Gun: Maverick,” Gunn explained. “We shoot much of our action with drones weaving around Superman and his airborne companions or foes, all on sound stages. These cutting-edge drones and world-class operators brought an entirely new dimension to our shots.”
The Guardians of the Galaxy director also teased a bold narrative approach. The film skips the origin story, diving directly into Superman’s world.
“We just start in the middle of the action,” Gunn stated. “Superman already exists, Lois and Clark know each other, and Lex Luthor despises him from the outset. The story unfolds over a short timeframe, keeping the energy tight and focused.”

Another pivotal decision was Superman’s costume, a design that resonates with the character’s hope-filled essence. After testing several versions, including ones without the classic red trunks, the team landed on a look that pays homage to Superman’s comic book roots.
“David [Corenswet] said Superman wants to be a figure of hope and positivity,” Gunn shared. “He’s an alien with immense powers, and his costume reflects that optimism. It’s brightly colored, almost playful, reminding us that he’s a superhero, the first and brightest of them all.”
Gunn emphasized that the costume’s charm lies in its unapologetic simplicity. “Superman’s outfit has a certain frivolity, and that’s what makes it iconic. Trying to strip that away would lose the essence of who he is.”
With a mix of modern cinematic techniques and a deep respect for Superman’s legacy, James Gunn’s vision promises to redefine the Man of Steel for a new generation. Fans will undoubtedly be watching closely as Superman takes flight once more.
