Squid Game Returns: Netflix Announces Season 2 and Series Finale
Global Phenomenon to Conclude with Third Season in 2025, Promising Intense Showdown
Netflix has revealed the highly anticipated return date for its most-watched series, Squid Game, while also setting an end date for the global hit. The second season is slated to premiere on December 26, right after Christmas, a peak period for streaming. Furthermore, Hwang Dong-hyuk, the executive producer, writer, and director, confirmed that the third and final season will air in 2025.
The second season of Squid Game comes more than three years after its debut in 2021, when it captivated audiences worldwide. The series holds the top spot among Netflix shows, regardless of language, with 265.2 million views and 2.2 billion hours of watch time in its first 13 weeks.
In a letter announcing the show’s concluding seasons, Hwang teased the return of Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), who is set on seeking revenge. “Will he succeed in getting his revenge? Front Man doesn’t seem to be an easy opponent this time either. The fierce clash between their two worlds will continue into the series finale in season three,” Hwang wrote.
Season two will see the return of cast members Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-jun, and Gong Yoo, alongside new additions Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Gyu-young, Lee Jin-uk, Park Sung-hoon, Yang Dong-geun, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Choi Seung-hyun, Roh Jae-won, Jo Yu-ri, and Won Ji-an.
Netflix offered a brief glimpse of the upcoming season in a sizzle reel earlier this year, later confirming its return in the latter half of 2024. Meanwhile, Squid Game: The Challenge, a reality competition inspired by the drama, will also have a second season.
“I am thrilled to see the seed that was planted in creating a new Squid Game grow and bear fruit through the end of this story,” Hwang expressed in his letter. “We’ll do our best to make sure we bring you yet another thrill ride. I hope you’re excited for what’s to come.”
Both Lee Jung-jae and Hwang Dong-hyuk received Emmys for their work on the first season. Hwang will continue to executive produce the series alongside Kim Ji-yeon.
