Sophie Turner Set to Become Next Lara Croft in Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Tomb Raider Series
Prime Video’s live-action reboot begins filming on January 19, 2026, with a powerhouse creative team bringing the iconic adventurer to life

Amazon’s Prime Video is turning a new page in the Tomb Raider saga: Sophie Turner, best known for her role in Game of Thrones, will step into the storied boots of Lara Croft in a forthcoming live-action television series. Created, written, executive produced, and co-showrun by Phoebe Waller-Bridge—the creative force behind Fleabag and Killing Eve—the series is scheduled to begin production on January 19, 2026.
Joining Waller-Bridge to shepherd the project is Chad Hodge (Good Behavior, Single All the Way), who will serve as co-showrunner and executive producer. The first episodes will be directed by Jonathan Van Tulleken, known for Shōgun.
Waller-Bridge, a longtime fan of the franchise, shared her enthusiasm: “I’m so excited to announce the formidable Sophie Turner as our Lara alongside this phenomenal creative team… Everyone on board is wildly passionate about Lara and are all as outrageous, brave, and hilarious as she is. Get your artifacts out — Croft is coming.”
Turner responded with equal excitement: “I am thrilled beyond measure to be playing Lara Croft… They’re massive shoes to fill, following in the steps of Angelina and Alicia with their powerhouse performances, but with Phoebe at the helm, we (and Lara) are all in very safe hands. I can’t wait for you all to see what we have cooking.”
This marks Turner as the third actress to embody Croft in live-action, following Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander in prior film adaptations.
After years in development—including a formal series order in May 2024—this announcement confirms that production is officially underway. The series is being produced by Crystal Dynamics (the developers behind the Tomb Raider games), Story Kitchen, and Amazon MGM Studios, with multiple executive producers attached across these entities.
With a talented ensemble behind the camera and a beloved character at its core, the series promises to give fans a bold, witty, and modern reimagining of Lara Croft’s adventures.
