Sonakshi Sinha Turns Dark Goddess for Her Telugu Debut Jatadhara

The actress transforms into the fierce demon goddess Dhan Pishachini, enduring grueling physical challenges and 50 kilos of jewellery for her most demanding role yet.

Sonakshi Sinha, known for her dynamic performances in Bollywood, is venturing into an exciting new chapter with her Telugu debut Jatadhara. The fantasy-thriller, starring Sudheer Babu and directed by Venkat Kalyan and Abhishek Jaiswal, sees Sonakshi stepping into the role of Dhan Pishachini — a demon goddess of wealth who embodies human greed. The film explores the clash between good and evil through mythological storytelling and high-intensity action.

For Sonakshi, Jatadhara has been one of the most challenging experiences of her career. In interviews, she described her character as “a full-fledged, fearsome antagonist — deadly and powerful.” The story, she explained, begins with a woman whose obsession with wealth transforms her into a dark, otherworldly being. “It’s the story of greed — something very relevant to the world we live in today,” she added.

The physical demands of the role pushed Sonakshi to her limits. She revealed that preparing for the shoot required nearly three hours of makeup and costume work each day. Her look included a traditional saree layered over a heavy harness for wire-work stunts and an astonishing 50 kilos of jewellery — each piece stitched onto her costume to stay secure during action sequences. “It was definitely not easy. I was tangled in harnesses all day, carrying all that weight, but when you see the final look, it feels completely worth it,” she said.

The film’s production itself was as intense as Sonakshi’s preparation. The team reportedly shot the climactic sequence over three consecutive days, working nearly 24 hours non-stop. The teaser for Jatadhara, unveiled by megastar Prabhas, showcases grand visuals, dramatic world-building, and the central conflict between greed and sacrifice.

Jatadhara is set for a theatrical release in both Telugu and Hindi on 7 November 2025. For Sonakshi, this marks not just her first foray into regional cinema, but also her first major turn as a full-scale villain — a far cry from her earlier roles in Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar and Dahaad. Her transformation into Dhan Pishachini reflects both her artistic evolution and the growing ambition of Indian cinema to deliver visually spectacular, pan-India storytelling.
