Sonakshi Sinha Embraces Complex Characters in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “Heeramandi – The Diamond Bazaar”
The actor dives into her role as Fareedan, discussing her experience in an exclusive interview

Sonakshi Sinha is no stranger to challenging roles, and her latest endeavor in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s highly anticipated series, “Heeramandi – The Diamond Bazaar,” proves just that. In the series, she embodies the character of Fareedan, a role she eagerly embraced for its complexity and depth.
In an exclusive interview with Hindustan Times, Sonakshi delved into her portrayal of Fareedan and the unique challenges it presented. “This is a character I have been waiting to do for a very long time,” she expressed. “I have always wanted to play a slightly negative, slightly villainous character, and I am really thankful to Sanjay sir that he saw me in this role.”
Reflecting on the trust Bhansali placed in her abilities, Sonakshi highlighted the director’s vision in depicting characters in unconventional ways. “It is really encouraging for an actor when a filmmaker like him imagines you and tries to portray you in a way that nobody has ever seen you before,” she remarked.
Describing Fareedan as a character distinct from her own persona, Sonakshi emphasized the depth of emotions she had to explore. “She is full of vengeance and hatred and anger and all the negative feelings,” Sonakshi explained. “But the beauty about Sanjay sir and the way he portrays his women is that he makes them so relatable… he justifies their feelings.”
Sonakshi also touched upon the meticulous attention to detail in the production, from costumes to jewelry, that helped bring Fareedan to life on screen. “The costumes, the jewellery, everything is so well taken care of,” she noted. “It all just came together to make one beautiful character on screen, and I really enjoyed playing her.”
As audiences await the release of “Heeramandi – The Diamond Bazaar,” Sonakshi’s portrayal of Fareedan promises to captivate viewers with its complexity and depth, showcasing her versatility as an actor.
