Soha Ali Khan Reveals How Rani Mukerji Replaced Her in Paheli After Shah Rukh Khan’s Entry
The actress quit her banking job for her big Bollywood debut, only to be dropped when the film’s casting changed.

Bollywood actress Soha Ali Khan has shared a surprising story about how her intended debut film slipped away before it even began. In a recent interview, Soha revealed that she was originally offered the female lead in Amol Palekar’s 2005 fantasy drama Paheli. However, when Shah Rukh Khan was finalized as the male lead, the role was reassigned to Rani Mukerji, leaving Soha out of the project.
At the time, Soha was working at Citibank in Mumbai, earning a comfortable salary while paying ₹17,000 per month in rent. She had plans to move to London for a work permit, but when Palekar approached her with the script, she decided to give acting a shot. Convinced by his credibility and the strength of the story, she even resigned from her banking job to dedicate herself fully to the film.
“I thought this would be my first film. Amol Palekar asked me to quit my job, and I did,” Soha recalled. “But once Shah Rukh Khan came on board, I was told someone else would be playing the role. That’s when Rani Mukerji stepped in.” The actress admitted the decision stung, especially as she suddenly faced the reality of paying her rent without her steady income.
Soha confessed she was still new to the industry then and didn’t fully grasp that nothing was final until a contract was signed or cameras started rolling. Looking back, she called it an important learning experience about the uncertainties of show business.
Though Paheli eventually released in 2005 with Shah Rukh Khan and Rani Mukerji in the lead, Soha went on to make her debut with the Bengali film Iti Srikanta in 2004, followed by her Hindi debut in Dil Maange More!!! later that year.
Her candid reflection highlights how unpredictable casting decisions can shape an actor’s journey — sometimes closing one door, but opening another.
