Simu Liu Returns as Shang-Chi in Marvel’s Epic Avengers: Doomsday
The actor calls the 2026 blockbuster a “love letter to superhero movies” as he reunites with the Russos and a star-studded Marvel lineup.

Simu Liu is officially back as Shang-Chi, stepping once again into the Marvel Cinematic Universe for Avengers: Doomsday, the highly anticipated fifth Avengers film set to release on December 18, 2026.
In a recent interview, Liu shared his excitement about reuniting with some of the biggest names in Marvel history, saying, “There are just so many actors in it, and getting to work with those people as peers is really incredible because I grew up watching so many of them.”
The actor added that the film “feels, in a lot of ways, like a love letter to the entire genre of superhero movies,” emphasizing that it’s dedicated “to all the misfits and the weirdos and the underdogs that grew up reading comic books and feeling like there was hope for them somehow – that it didn’t matter if they didn’t fit in.”
What We Know
Avengers: Doomsday will be directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, the visionary duo behind Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. The screenplay comes from Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely, both veterans of the Marvel franchise.
The film boasts one of the most ambitious casts in MCU history, featuring Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Anthony Mackie as Captain America, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, Vanessa Kirby as Susan Storm, and Lewis Pullman as Sentry. Joining them are Danny Ramirez as the new Falcon, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Winston Duke as M’Baku, and Tom Hiddleston reprising his fan-favorite role as Loki.
The film also merges universes by including iconic X-Men actors such as Patrick Stewart (Professor X), Ian McKellen (Magneto), Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler), Rebecca Romijn (Mystique), James Marsden (Cyclops), and Channing Tatum in his long-rumored debut as Gambit.
Production began earlier this year at Pinewood Studios in England, with the film currently deep in post-production ahead of its 2026 release.
What Fans Can Expect
For Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi, Doomsday represents a defining chapter — expanding his character’s journey beyond solo adventures to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the Avengers and other heroes. Liu’s comments suggest that the film won’t just be a visual spectacle but also a heartfelt tribute to everything that has defined the superhero genre for over two decades.
Described as one of the biggest crossovers in cinematic history, Avengers: Doomsday will reportedly unite Avengers, Wakandans, the Fantastic Four, and the original X-Men as they face a world-altering threat led by Doctor Doom.
While Marvel initially planned to release the movie in May 2026, it was later shifted to December to allow more time for production and refinement — a move that only heightens anticipation among fans.
With Simu Liu’s heartfelt passion, a massive ensemble of Marvel icons, and the Russo brothers once again steering the ship, Avengers: Doomsday is shaping up to be a monumental event for superhero cinema. It’s more than just another battle — it’s a celebration of every hero, outcast, and dreamer who ever believed in something extraordinary.
