Simu Liu Provides Update on Shang-Chi Sequel, Revealing Delays and Uncertainties

Simu Liu, the lead actor in Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, recently took to social media to provide fans with an update on the highly-anticipated sequel. In a post on his Threads account, a new social media app, Liu invited fans to ask him anything, and one fan inquired about the status of the Shang-Chi sequel.

Liu responded, revealing that he was originally informed that the sequel would follow the Avengers storyline. However, he shared that the release of the Avengers film has been repeatedly pushed back due to circumstances beyond his control. Although he didn’t elaborate on the exact reasons for the delays, Disney has recently made changes to its release calendar, including pushing back Avengers: Secret Wars to May 7, 2027, and Avengers: The Kang Dynasty to May 1, 2026. Moreover, Jonathan Majors, who is attached to the latter film, is currently facing assault charges in New York.

In addition to the Avengers films, several other Marvel projects, including Thunderbolts and Blade, have also been affected by the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike, resulting in further delays.

Liu expressed his hope to have more concrete news to share soon regarding the Shang-Chi sequel. In December 2021, it was announced that Destin Daniel Cretton, the writer and director of the first Shang-Chi film, would be returning for the sequel. Cretton, who signed an overall deal with Marvel following the success of the first film, expressed his excitement about collaborating with Marvel and exploring new stories and worlds.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, released in September 2021, became a significant milestone for the Marvel Cinematic Universe by featuring an Asian lead and predominantly Asian cast. The film achieved a global box office gross of $432 million.

While Simu Liu has been involved in other projects, including Greta Gerwig’s upcoming Barbie film, he previously hinted that fans might see his Marvel character interact with other major superheroes in another film. Though he didn’t disclose which movie, Liu teased that audiences might witness something sooner than expected.

As fans eagerly await further updates on the Shang-Chi sequel, it seems that various factors, such as release date changes and industry strikes, have contributed to the delays and uncertainties surrounding the highly-anticipated Marvel film.
