Sharon Stone Shrugs Off Amazon MGM’s ‘Basic Instinct’ Reboot: “Good F—ing Luck”
Sharon Stone casts doubt on the reboot of her 1992 classic, recalling the flop sequel and reflecting on her career, health struggles, and return to acting.

Sharon Stone isn’t thrilled about Amazon MGM Studios’ decision to reboot Basic Instinct, the 1992 erotic thriller that cemented her as a Hollywood icon. When asked about the project on the Today show, Stone didn’t mince words: “If it goes the way the one that I was in went, I would just say, ‘Why do you do it?’ Go ahead, but good f—ing luck.”
The actress, now 67, referenced the critically panned Basic Instinct 2 (2006), which failed to capture the original’s lightning in a bottle. Her dismissive tone echoed Catherine Tramell, the razor-sharp femme fatale she made legendary three decades ago.
Stone also spoke about being in a different stage of life, one where she feels liberated from public opinion. “I’m at that stage where I already retired once, and I already died a couple of times. I’m like, ‘What are you gonna do? Kill me again? Go ahead.’”
Her words carry weight, given her personal journey. In 2001, Stone suffered a life-threatening stroke, which prompted her to step away from Hollywood to raise her children. Now that her kids are grown, she says she’s ready to embrace acting again, but only on her own terms.
Meanwhile, the reboot is moving ahead with original screenwriter Joe Eszterhas, who has struck a lucrative deal with Amazon MGM. The studio reportedly sees Basic Instinct as another chance to replicate the success of their recent Road House reboot. Eszterhas, despite being 80, has defended himself against skepticism, insisting he’s still capable of delivering a provocative, “wild and orgasmic” script.
For now, Stone seems content to let the studio gamble on recapturing the magic—while she focuses on her current role as an unhinged crime boss in Nobody 2.
