Sarah Michelle Gellar Hints at Possible Return to the Buffyverse

After Years of Resistance, the Iconic Slayer Considers Revisiting “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” for a New Era of Storytelling

Sarah Michelle Gellar, once adamant about leaving Buffy the Vampire Slayer in the past, has now opened the door to a possible return to the beloved universe. During an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, the actress revealed she’s been reevaluating her stance on reprising her iconic role as Buffy Summers.

“I always used to say no, because it’s in its bubble and it’s so perfect,” Gellar shared. “But watching shows like And Just Like That… and Dexter: Original Sin made me realize there are ways to revisit these stories. It definitely gets you thinking, ‘Well, maybe.’”

Gellar emphasized that any new project in the Buffyverse wouldn’t need to be limited to a prequel. Instead, she sees endless possibilities for expanding the narrative. “It could be anything,” she said. “It’s a universe. And in today’s world, we need those heroes more than ever.”

This shift in perspective comes as a surprise, especially since Gellar expressed a different sentiment in 2023. Speaking to SFX Magazine (via IndieWire), the Golden Globe nominee had firmly stated she wasn’t interested in a revival, adding, “I am very proud of the show that we created, and it doesn’t need to be done. We wrapped that up.”

Despite her previous reluctance, the actress seems open to the idea of exploring new ways to bring Buffy back, reigniting hope among fans who’ve long wished to see the Slayer return.

Originally airing from 1997 to 2003, Buffy the Vampire Slayer was adapted from the 1992 film and followed Buffy Summers, a teenage girl destined to battle vampires and supernatural threats. The series has remained a cultural touchstone, inspiring generations with its blend of wit, action, and emotional depth.

Up next, Gellar will appear in Dexter: Original Sin, a prequel to the hit series Dexter. She also starred in the supernatural thriller Wolf Pack in 2023, continuing her streak of working on genre-defining projects.
