Saif Ali Khan Reflects on Harrowing Home Invasion and Recovery

The actor shares details of the attack, his family’s reactions, and his perspective on the incident.

In a recent interview, Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan opened up about the traumatic home invasion at his Bandra residence on January 16, 2025. The incident left him with multiple stab wounds, leading to emergency surgery at Lilavati Hospital. Now on the path to recovery, Khan recounted the events of that night and the aftermath.

Khan described how he and a house help armed themselves with decorative swords to confront the intruder. His wife, Kareena Kapoor Khan, prioritized their children’s safety, urging them to leave the premises. Reflecting on the confrontation, Khan said, “It was a film scene where I was covered in blood, and we took two decorative swords off the wall. And that’s what Taimur saw – me covered in blood and Hari, the other house help, holding two swords. So, it was vaguely heroic, at least that moment.” He emphasized that he does not believe in keeping guns at home for safety purposes.

The actor sustained significant injuries, including deep cuts on his back, wrist, and neck. After the assailant fled, Khan and Kapoor struggled to find immediate transportation to the hospital. Khan recalled, “Kareena was shouting for a rickshaw, or a cab or anything. I said, I kind of feel some pain. There’s something wrong with my back. She said, you go to the hospital, I will go to my sister’s (Karisma Kapoor’s) house. She was making calls frantically- but nobody was up. And we looked at each other and I said, ‘I’m fine. I’m not going to die.'”

Despite the severity of the attack, Khan expressed empathy towards the intruder, suggesting it was a burglary attempt gone wrong. He stated, “I think it just was a burglary attempt gone wrong. That poor guy, his life is more screwed than mine.” Khan also mentioned that he does not plan to keep any weapons for added security in his Mumbai residence. He reasoned, “Nothing will change. See, if you start doing that… because I don’t feel I’m under threat.”

The Mumbai police have arrested a 30-year-old Bangladeshi national, Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, in connection with the attack. Investigations revealed that Shehzad had entered India illegally and had been living under an assumed name. Authorities believe the motive was robbery.

Khan was discharged from the hospital on January 21 and is currently recuperating at home. He expressed gratitude for the support from fans and assured them of his steady recovery.
