Sabrina Carpenter to Star in and Produce a Magical Alice-Inspired Musical for Universal Pictures

Following her six Grammy nominations for Man’s Best Friend, Sabrina Carpenter is set to headline and co-produce a new Universal musical reimagining of Alice in Wonderland with director Lorene Scafaria.

Pop sensation Sabrina Carpenter is stepping into a new creative chapter, officially signing on to star in and produce an untitled Universal Pictures musical inspired by Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. The project will mark Carpenter’s first major studio lead role, blending fantasy, music, and modern storytelling in what’s being described as a bold re-imagining of the beloved classic.

The film will be directed and written by Lorene Scafaria, best known for her acclaimed work on Hustlers and Succession. Carpenter joins a powerhouse production team that includes Marc Platt, the producer behind La La Land and the upcoming Wicked: For Good, alongside Leslie Morgenstein and Elysa Koplovitz Dutton of Alloy Entertainment. Universal’s Ryan Jones and Jacqueline Garell will oversee the project, with Katie McNicol representing Marc Platt Productions.

This marks a fresh approach to Alice in Wonderland, a story deeply tied to Disney’s legacy through its iconic 1951 animated film and Tim Burton’s 2010 live-action version, which grossed over $1 billion worldwide. Its sequel, Alice Through the Looking Glass (2016), earned nearly $300 million. Universal’s new take aims to give the timeless tale a musical and emotional spin, with Carpenter’s unique artistry and Scafaria’s sharp direction at its core.

Carpenter, who recently earned six Grammy nominations for her seventh studio album Man’s Best Friend, including Album, Song, and Record of the Year, continues to prove she’s one of pop culture’s most versatile talents. She previously appeared in films such as The Hate U Give, Emergency, Clouds, and Netflix’s Tall Girl series.

Interestingly, the singer-actor reportedly pitched this project herself to Universal, developing it over the past year. While plot specifics remain under wraps — including whether Carpenter will play Alice herself — early industry buzz suggests the musical will offer a fresh, empowering twist on the classic story’s themes of identity and wonder.

With Universal’s strong musical pedigree and Carpenter’s skyrocketing star power, this Alice-inspired fantasy could become one of the studio’s most anticipated projects in the coming years.
