Robert Downey Jr. Was Destined to Play Doctor Doom—Long Before Iron Man
Years before suiting up as Tony Stark, Marvel had considered Downey for Victor Von Doom. Now, he’s finally embracing the role in ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’
Robert Downey Jr.’s journey within the Marvel universe has come full circle. Before he became synonymous with Tony Stark, Downey Jr. was considered for the role of Victor Von Doom in 2005’s “Fantastic Four.” Director Jon Favreau recalled discussions about Downey Jr. portraying Doctor Doom, highlighting the actor’s longstanding connection to the character.
Fast forward to last year’s San Diego Comic-Con, where Downey Jr. surprised fans by appearing onstage as Doctor Doom, signaling his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in a villainous capacity. This casting decision was championed by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, who had long envisioned Downey Jr. in the role of Doom. Initially hesitant, directors Joe and Anthony Russo were eventually convinced to helm the project after screenwriter Steve McFeely presented a compelling narrative. Joe Russo emphasized the importance of crafting complex villains, especially when portrayed by actors of Downey Jr.’s caliber.
“Avengers: Doomsday,” slated for release on May 1, 2026, promises to challenge the Avengers with a formidable adversary in Doctor Doom. The film is expected to feature a blend of familiar faces and new allies, including the potential involvement of the Fantastic Four. This casting not only brings depth to the MCU’s narrative but also showcases Downey Jr.’s versatility in embodying both hero and villain.
