Richa Chadha Raises Alarm Over ‘Vanishing’ Indie Cinema in Bollywood

The actor-producer questions commercial trends and industry dynamics, saying the once-thriving independent film space has nearly disappeared

Richa Chadha has voiced serious concerns about the current state of Hindi cinema, highlighting what she believes is the steady disappearance of India’s independent film movement. Known for her work in critically acclaimed projects like Masaan, the actor said that indie cinema once had a strong and distinct presence in the industry, offering unique storytelling and fresh voices. However, according to her, that space has now almost vanished, with fewer opportunities for such films to thrive or even exist in their original form.

Chadha also pointed out a growing trend where mainstream commercial actors are being cast in independent films, a move she believes does not necessarily benefit the films either commercially or artistically. She argued that these decisions often stem from market pressures rather than creative intent, ultimately diluting the essence of indie filmmaking.

Beyond casting, she emphasized deeper structural challenges within the industry, including limited screen availability, rising ticket prices, and the dominance of large production houses controlling distribution. These factors, she believes, are making it increasingly difficult for small-budget, meaningful cinema to survive, sparking a larger conversation about the balance between commerce and creativity in Bollywood.
