Writer-Director of ‘Life After Beth’ and Husband of Aubrey Plaza Found Dead in Los Angeles Home

Jeff Baena, the acclaimed writer and director celebrated for indie films such as Life After Beth (2014), Joshy (2016), and The Little Hours (2017), has passed away at the age of 47. His body was discovered by an assistant at his Los Angeles residence on January 3, 2025. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office has ruled the cause of death as suicide by hanging.

Born on June 29, 1977, in Miami, Florida, Baena pursued film studies at New York University. After relocating to Los Angeles, he began his career as a production assistant for director Robert Zemeckis, contributing to projects like What Lies Beneath and Cast Away (both 2000). He later served as an assistant editor for writer-director David O. Russell, with whom he co-wrote the 2004 film I Heart Huckabees.

Baena’s directorial debut came with Life After Beth, a zombie comedy featuring Aubrey Plaza, which premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. He continued to make his mark with Joshy in 2016 and The Little Hours in 2017, both of which received critical acclaim for their unique blend of dark humor and heartfelt storytelling. His later works include Horse Girl (2020) and Spin Me Round (2022), both co-written with actress Alison Brie.

In his personal life, Baena began a relationship with actress Aubrey Plaza in 2011. The couple married in a private ceremony in 2021. Plaza, known for her roles in Parks and Recreation and The White Lotus, has not yet publicly commented on her husband’s passing.
