Ranbir Kapoor’s ‘Ramayana’ Used Interstellar’s 86-Camera VFX Tech, Reveals Actress Playing Kaushalya

Veteran actress Indira Krishnan shares behind-the-scenes secrets from Nitesh Tiwari’s upcoming epic, from mind-blowing VFX tech to her heartfelt reunion with Ranbir Kapoor.

The buzz around Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana refuses to die down—and for good reason. Since the title reveal, anticipation for the mythological epic has soared, with fans eagerly awaiting every detail. Now, veteran actress Indira Krishnan, who plays Kaushalya—mother to Ranbir Kapoor’s Lord Ram—has shared some jaw-dropping insights from the film’s shoot that are bound to elevate the excitement even further.

In a recent conversation with NDTV, Indira revealed that the scale of the production is unlike anything she has witnessed before. She heaped praise on the production house Prime Focus and the VFX team, calling their work “monumental” and expressing admiration for how such a massive cast was assembled and captured with precision. Indira also described director Nitesh Tiwari as “a man of visuals,” acknowledging his mastery in handling the ambitious scope of the film.

But what truly stunned her was a specific VFX tool used during her prep. Recalling her visit for body scanning, she said, “I was taken aback when I learned the equipment used on me was the same as the one from Christopher Nolan’s ‘Interstellar.’ It was an 86-camera setup. All the cameras flashed at me at once—I was completely zoned out!” The rig wasn’t just for costume fittings—it was part of a larger, meticulous process to digitally recreate younger versions of the characters and ensure every detail, from posture to mannerisms, was accurate.

Speaking about her role, Indira emphasized the nuanced portrayal of Kaushalya. “There are no loud dialogues. Everything is about poise and controlled grace—even how Kaushalya walks or sits was thoroughly planned.”

Interestingly, this marks Indira’s second collaboration with Ranbir Kapoor. The two had previously shared screen space in Animal, where she played Rashmika Mandanna’s mother. She fondly recalled a moment from that set: “Rashmika once said she wished I played her mother again, but I looked at Ranbir and joked, ‘Next, I want to play your mom.'”

Cut to two years later, life came full circle. Indira recounted her surreal experience of being cast in Ramayana: “When I arrived at the production office, Ranbir came up to me and said, ‘Remember what you told me two years ago?’ I laughed and asked, ‘You remember that?’ He replied, ‘Yes—and now you’re my mother.’ It was such a beautiful moment.”

The mythological epic is being planned as a trilogy, with the first part scheduled to hit theatres on Diwali 2026, followed by the second installment in Diwali 2027. With such groundbreaking technology, emotional resonance, and cinematic ambition, Ramayana is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated Indian films of the decade.
