Raj’s Runway Regret: How The Big Bang Theory Wardrobe Shaped (and Stifled) Kunal Nayyar’s Fashion Taste

Kunal Nayyar—best known for bringing Raj Koothrappali to life on The Big Bang Theory—recently opened up on The Official Big Bang Theory Podcast about an unexpected side effect of his 12-year run on the show: his personal style has never been the same.

A self-confessed fashion enthusiast, Nayyar recalled his initial reaction to Raj’s wardrobe with a mix of humor and disbelief. From layered button-downs and sweater vests to cargo pants, the looks perfectly captured the awkward charm of his character—but left the actor struggling to embrace similar styles off-screen.

“If you watch what I wore that entire show, it’s ridiculously hideous, but also ridiculously good for the character,” he admitted. The experience left such an imprint that he now avoids anything reminiscent of Raj’s look: “I can’t wear clothes—like vintage Gucci sweaters or something that looks like Raj’s sweaters that are in fashion now. I can’t wear that stuff.”

Beyond fashion, Nayyar also reflected on his deep bond with co-star Melissa Rauch, who played Bernadette. The pair reunited on Rauch’s sitcom Night Court in 2024, and Nayyar described their connection as an “unspoken language of deep love, trust, and connection” forged during their years together on The Big Bang Theory.

Looking ahead, the actor is set to star as Scrooge in Gurinder Chadha’s modern-day adaptation of A Christmas Carol titled Christmas Karma. He will also appear in the upcoming films The Up and Comer and Patel, signaling an exciting new chapter in his career.
