Rachel Zegler Addresses ‘Snow White’ Casting Controversy and Film’s Modern Take

Actress interprets backlash as fan passion and discusses the live-action remake’s contemporary approach.

Rachel Zegler, set to portray the iconic character in Disney’s upcoming live-action adaptation of “Snow White,” has responded to the criticism surrounding her casting and comments about the original 1937 film. In an interview with Vogue Mexico, Zegler expressed that she views the intense reactions as a testament to the audience’s deep connection to the classic tale.

“I interpret people’s feelings about this film as a passion for it,” Zegler remarked. “What an honor to be part of something that people feel so passionate about.” She acknowledged that differing opinions are inevitable and emphasized the importance of delivering one’s best amidst varying perspectives.

The actress’s casting, announced in 2021, faced backlash due to her Colombian heritage, with some critics arguing it deviated from the traditional depiction of Snow White. The controversy intensified when Zegler described the original film as “dated” and critiqued the prince’s behavior as “literally stalking” the princess. Her outspoken stance against former President Donald Trump’s re-election further fueled calls for boycotting the film from certain groups.

Reflecting on representation in cinema, Zegler found inspiration in witnessing young Black girls’ reactions to Halle Bailey’s portrayal in the 2023 live-action “The Little Mermaid.” She candidly discussed her Colombian roots, emphasizing the responsibility of representing the diverse Latino community in the entertainment industry. “I understand that the community doesn’t want to be seen as a monolith,” she noted. “I know where I have been, I represent it in my narrative, and I carry it in my heart every day.”

Addressing the upcoming film’s direction, Zegler highlighted the balance Disney aims to achieve between honoring the beloved 1937 classic and introducing the story to a new generation. She emphasized the evolution of Snow White’s character, portraying her as a strong, self-sufficient leader rather than a damsel in distress. “Her superpower is her heart,” Zegler explained. “There is no supernatural power that Snow White possesses beyond her love for humanity, for all living creatures, and her fundamental belief that there is goodness in everything.”

Directed by Marc Webb, the film also stars Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen and Andrew Burnap as a new character named Jonathan, replacing the original prince. “Snow White” is scheduled for theatrical release on March 21, 2025.
