Parineeti Chopra Speaks Out Against Bollywood Favoritism

In a candid interview, the actress sheds light on industry biases and the struggle for equal opportunities.

Parineeti Chopra has garnered praise for her role in the recent film “Amar Singh Chamkila,” directed by Imtiaz Ali, where she stars as Diljit Dosanjh’s on-screen wife. Amidst the acclaim, Chopra is shedding light on what she describes as the darker side of Bollywood – a world where camps and favorites dictate opportunities.

Despite being the cousin of global icon Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Parineeti’s journey in Bollywood has been a mix of highs and lows. While she boasts successes like “Golmaal Again” and “Kesari,” she’s also faced setbacks with films like “Namaste England,” “Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar,” and her recent release “Mission Raniganj.” Her latest venture, “Amar Singh Chamkila,” premiered on Netflix on April 12, 2024.

In an interview with Pinkvilla, Parineeti Chopra candidly pointed out the prevalence of favoritism in Bollywood, attributing it to the lack of equal work opportunities. She remarked, “There are camps, there are circles, there are favorites. Two people who are similarly talented, who can bring the same thing to the table, one will be a favorite, and one will not, and the one who is not will lose the work opportunity, which is why I really urge that this becomes a meritocracy.”

Chopra advocated for a system where talent reigns supreme, irrespective of personal relationships or affiliations within the industry. She urged directors and producers to consider her for roles based on her abilities rather than her connections.

Acknowledging her own struggles, Parineeti Chopra confessed to not being adept at the PR games often played in Bollywood. She highlighted the importance of industry gatherings and parties in the casting process, events she admitted to frequently missing out on.
