Noomi Rapace to Portray Mother Teresa in Teona Strugar Mitevska’s New Film
Mother” to Highlight a Pivotal Week in the Life of the Renowned Saint
Noomi Rapace is set to star as Mother Teresa in “Mother,” a new biographical film directed by Teona Strugar Mitevska, the acclaimed director of “God Exists, Her Name Is Petrunya.”
Rapace, known for her roles in “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” and Ridley Scott’s “Prometheus,” will embody the iconic Catholic saint during a critical week in her life. The film will focus on the seven days leading up to Mother Teresa’s decision to leave the Loreto Entally convent in Calcutta to establish her own order.
“Mother” marks Mitevska’s English-language debut. She described Rapace as “a perfect fit” for the role, envisioning Mother Teresa as a rebellious, almost punk figure challenging the Catholic Church’s structures.
Mitevska, who hails from Northern Macedonia, the same region as Mother Teresa, shared that she grew up with the myth of the saint. Initially uninterested in the religious aspects of Mother Teresa’s life, Mitevska’s perspective changed after producing a documentary about her for local television. She discovered a deep personal connection, saying, “I absolutely related to her as a woman and I saw a lot of myself in her.”
“Mother” is a five-country co-production involving Macedonia’s Sisters and Brother Mitevski, Belgium’s Entre Chien et Loup, Denmark’s Frau Film, the Netherlands’ Baldar Film, and Sweden’s Spark Film & TV and Film i Väst. Kinology is managing global sales for the film.
