Nicole Kidman Overcame Height Challenges to Achieve Hollywood Success

Nicole Kidman recently shared on the “Radio Times Podcast” that early in her career in Australia, she was told she wouldn’t make it in Hollywood due to her height. Despite facing rejection and height-related challenges during auditions, Kidman defied the odds to become a U.S. star and an Oscar winner for her role in “The Hours.”
Reflecting on her struggles, Kidman recalled a daunting experience at an open audition for “Annie,” where actors were measured for height at the door. Those deemed too tall were instantly rejected. Kidman had to talk her way into the casting room, even resorting to embellishing her height.
“I had to talk my way through the door because they were measuring you before you went in. I was mortified,” Kidman revealed, admitting to occasionally claiming she was “5 foot 10 ½ inches” instead of her actual height of “5 foot 11 inches.”
Despite being teased and called names like “Storky,” Kidman found strength in her height, using it to her advantage in certain acting roles. She acknowledged both the challenges and advantages, stating, “I’m incredibly grateful to be healthy and walking around. Having said that, I’ve had knee issues and all sorts of things — partly because of my height.”
Kidman’s personal experiences with bullying over her height have influenced valuable lessons she imparts on her daughters. She emphasized the importance of inner resilience, advising her daughters that external opinions shouldn’t define them. “What matters is how you allow other people to either say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to you, and whether you accept that. Inner resilience as a human being, that’s the superpower, really.”
Currently, Kidman has reprised her role as Aquaman’s mother Queen Atlanna in the Warner Bros. sequel “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.” Her upcoming project includes the Prime Video limited series “Expats,” which she not only stars in but also executive produces. The series, directed by “The Farewell” director Lulu Wang, is set to debut on Jan. 26 on the streaming platform.
