Nicholas Hoult Teases ‘Something Special’ with His Lex Luthor in James Gunn’s Superman
The Superman star praises James Gunn’s vision and hints at a fresh take on the iconic villain, while celebrating his role alongside a stellar cast.

Nicholas Hoult, who takes on the role of Lex Luthor in the upcoming Superman reboot, believes fans are in for a treat. Speaking at AFI Fest, Hoult expressed his excitement about working with director James Gunn and shared insights into what makes the new DC Universe film stand out. “I just loved working with James Gunn,” Hoult said. “He’s an incredible director and has such a great sense of that world, that story, those characters. I just put my trust in him.”
The film, which marks the first entry in DC Studios’ Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, introduces a new era for Superman with David Corenswet taking up the cape, following Henry Cavill’s exit from the role. Gunn’s version focuses on Clark Kent’s early days at the Daily Planet as he learns to balance his human upbringing with his alien origins.

For Hoult, playing the villainous Lex Luthor offers a chance to dive into one of comic book history’s most iconic antagonists. Previously portrayed by actors like Gene Hackman and Jesse Eisenberg, Hoult hopes his performance brings something fresh to the table. “I’m a fan of Superman and Lex Luthor as a character, so hopefully we’ve done something special with it that people enjoy.”
Images from the film’s set reveal Hoult fully embracing the character, complete with Lex Luthor’s signature bald look. One scene even shows the actor sporting bruises, hinting at a potentially intense and physical storyline. Beyond the superhero world, Hoult continues to stay busy with major roles, including Clint Eastwood’s legal drama Juror No. 2 and a remake of the horror classic Nosferatu.
Hoult isn’t new to the superhero genre—fans may recognize him as Dr. Hank McCoy, a.k.a. Beast, from the X-Men franchise. However, taking on Luthor brings a new level of challenge and excitement for the actor. As a token of appreciation for the opportunity, Hoult gifted Gunn a wrap present, celebrating their collaboration.
The Superman reboot is shaping up to be an ambitious project with an ensemble cast that includes Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern, and Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl. Notably, the film also features a special cameo from Will Reeve, son of the legendary Christopher Reeve.
Currently in post-production, Gunn has confirmed that no reshoots are needed, and the film is on track for release. He’s been hard at work on the first trailer, building anticipation for what promises to be a bold new take on the Man of Steel.
