Netflix’s ‘Spaceman’: Adam Sandler Embarks on a Gravity-Defying Dramatic Journey

Adam Sandler takes a cosmic leap into the unknown in Netflix’s upcoming sci-fi spectacle, “Spaceman,” showcasing his most poignant performance yet as a solitary astronaut voyaging through the abyss of space.
Director Johan Renck deliberately steers away from Sandler’s comedic persona, aiming for a portrayal that’s devoid of any typical Sandler quirks. Renck revealed in an interview with Total Film his desire for Sandler’s character to exude “zero Adam Sandler.”
Sandler, in response to the director’s vision, embraced the challenge wholeheartedly. Speaking with GamesRadar+ and the Inside Total Film podcast, he humorously recalled Renck’s relentless reminders to deviate from his usual on-screen persona. Sandler affirmed his commitment to portraying a character distinctly different from his previous roles.
“Spaceman” orbits around astronaut Jakub Procházka (portrayed by Sandler), dispatched on a mission to the outer edges of the solar system to gather ancient celestial remnants. As his terrestrial relationship with Lenka (played by Carey Mulligan) deteriorates, Jakub finds solace in an enigmatic extraterrestrial entity inhabiting his spacecraft, voiced by Paul Dano. This unearthly encounter prompts Jakub to question the very fabric of reality, blurring the lines between truth and illusion.
In addition to the emotional depth demanded by the role, Sandler reveals the physical toll of portraying weightlessness. Tethered to wires and rigs for extensive periods to simulate zero gravity, he describes the experience as physically taxing, yet ultimately rewarding.
“I never quite found my footing,” Sandler admits. “Navigating those weightless moments pushed my body to its limits. Despite the challenges, every day was a rewarding struggle.”
“Spaceman” lands on Netflix screens on March 1, promising a cinematic voyage that transcends comedic bounds, propelled by Sandler’s transformative performance and the boundless expanse of the cosmos.
