Netflix Axes Shadow and Bone, Glamorous, and Animated Hits Amid Industry Shake-Up

In the wake of the SAG-AFTRA strike and the conclusion of the WGA work stoppage, Netflix has made the decision to discontinue several popular series. The streaming giant announced the cancellation of live-action series Shadow and Bone and Glamorous, along with adult animated comedies Agent Elvis, Farzar, and Captain Fall.

The move comes one week after the conclusion of the SAG-AFTRA strike and a month and a half after the end of the WGA work stoppage. Netflix’s decision follows a seven-month production shutdown caused by the strikes, prompting networks and platforms to reevaluate the impact on their content pipelines.

While other networks had been quick to cancel series during and after the strikes, Netflix had refrained from making such decisions during the past 6½ months. However, the latest cancellations indicate a shift in strategy as the streaming service considers the performance versus cost of its series.

The delays caused by the strikes have disrupted schedules for networks and streamers, creating a logjam of content for late 2024 and 2025. This, coupled with increased financial scrutiny within the industry, has led to a wave of cancellation decisions, with more expected in the coming weeks.

In the realm of adult animation, Netflix is undergoing a transition period under new leadership. The recent appointment of Billy Wee as Director of Adult Animation marks a shift in the development slate. The canceled animated comedies—Agent Elvis, Farzar, and Captain Fall—were greenlit by the previous regime, highlighting the changes in direction for Netflix’s adult animation department.

The cancellation of Captain Fall, still in the midst of its first season, follows disappointing viewership numbers for Part 1, released in July. Meanwhile, Shadow and Bone, the highest-profile series among the cancellations, saw a decline in impact with its second season, potentially influencing Netflix’s decision not to move forward with the fantasy drama.

As the industry grapples with the aftermath of the strikes and undergoes financial recalibration, more cancellation decisions are expected to surface in the coming weeks. The list of canceled series includes a diverse range of shows from various networks and streaming platforms, reflecting the broader impact of recent industry challenges.
