Mohit Suri Reveals Why He’s Not Directing Aashiqui 3 with Aditya & Shraddha

The filmmaker opens up about the creative roadblocks, original script ideas, and why Aashiqui 3 is still waiting for the right spark.

More than a decade after Aashiqui 2 became a nationwide sensation, fans have been eagerly waiting for an official announcement on Aashiqui 3—preferably with the beloved duo Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor. But director Mohit Suri has finally addressed the rumors, and his revelations are both surprising and revealing.

In a candid chat with Filmygyan, Suri responded to whether he’d helm the third installment with the original lead pair. He admitted, somewhat wryly, “The producers don’t want to hire me.” While he clarified that he’d absolutely love to collaborate with Aditya and Shraddha again, the weight of expectations following Aashiqui 2 is holding him back. “Aashiqui ka burden mere sir pe gir raha hai,” Suri confessed, referring to the immense pressure to outdo the emotional and musical high of the 2013 hit.

The director further explained that he’s still waiting for a script that surpasses Aashiqui 2 in both depth and emotional resonance—a task he finds incredibly difficult.

Interestingly, Suri also dropped a little-known fact in an interview with Pinkvilla. He revealed that his previously teased project Saiyaara was actually conceptualized as Aashiqui 3. “I was asked to pitch a draft for Aashiqui 3, but Mukesh Bhatt and Bhushan Kumar were in a hurry to announce it. I wasn’t comfortable with that,” Suri explained. He emphasized his process of prioritizing a solid script before making any public declaration. “So yes,” he added, “the idea of Saiyaara was originally Aashiqui 3.”

Aashiqui 2, released on April 26, 2013, turned out to be a career-defining moment for both Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor. Produced by Vishesh Films and T-Series, the film was praised for its soulful music, touching storyline, and raw performances. It became a modern-day cult romance and remains a favorite among fans of the genre.

While Aditya was recently seen in Metro… In Dino, Shraddha enjoyed massive success with the 2024 blockbuster Stree 2. Yet, whether they’ll reunite for another emotionally-charged love story under Suri’s direction still hangs in the balance.
