Matilda De Angelis Reflects on Citadel Journey: Inspired by Priyanka Chopra and Bonding with Samantha Ruth Prabhu
As Citadel: Diana gears up for release, Matilda De Angelis opens up about her admiration for Priyanka Chopra Jonas, her rigorous preparation, and the camaraderie shared with her fellow Citadel leads

Last month, the highly anticipated press screening for Citadel: Honey Bunny—the Indian installment of the Citadel universe, directed by Raj-DK and starring Varun Dhawan and Samantha Ruth Prabhu—took place in London. Amidst the event’s buzz, a memorable photo of the franchise’s leading women went viral. The snapshot captured Priyanka Chopra Jonas (Citadel), Samantha Ruth Prabhu (Citadel: Honey Bunny), and Matilda De Angelis (Citadel: Diana), showcasing the powerful female faces of the global spy franchise.
In a recent interview, Matilda De Angelis opened up about her admiration for Priyanka Chopra Jonas, revealing how inspired she was by her performance in the original Citadel. Matilda admitted to News18 that watching Priyanka in action was a pivotal moment for her. “When I first saw Priyanka in Citadel, I was deeply inspired. She was so incredibly good—stunning, strong, and completely badass! I wanted to be at her level,” Matilda shared. To rise to the challenge, Matilda dedicated herself to intense training, determined to meet the high bar set by the Desi Girl herself. “I trained very, very hard to fill the gaps and push myself further,” she added.
For those unfamiliar, Citadel: Honey Bunny is part of the Russo Brothers’ larger spy franchise, with Raj-DK helming the Indian adaptation. Meanwhile, Matilda is gearing up for her own chapter in the universe with Citadel: Diana, the Italian spin-off, which premieres on Prime Video on October 10, 2024.
Reflecting on her meeting with Priyanka and Samantha during the London event, Matilda spoke about the special bond they share. She first met the two actresses over a year and a half ago, and every reunion since has deepened their connection. “I feel very comfortable around them. Meeting them again in London felt natural, and it was great to share in our excitement for the future of Citadel,” she said.
The now-iconic photo of the trio from that night captured global attention, and Matilda expressed her eagerness to reunite with them again, noting that their conversations often revolved around their work on Citadel and their mutual enthusiasm for the franchise. Though their last meeting was brief, lasting only a couple of hours, Matilda is hoping for a longer, more personal gathering next time—perhaps a dinner with the two powerhouse actresses.

The Russo Brothers have previously described the Citadel franchise as their response to the James Bond films, aiming to spotlight strong female leads in prominent roles. Matilda expressed her admiration for this creative choice, praising the franchise for its thoughtful inclusion of women. However, she emphasized that the presence of strong female characters should be rooted in the narrative, not just for the sake of making a statement. “It’s only meaningful when these roles are essential to the story. Otherwise, it risks becoming just a trend or a gimmick,” Matilda commented.
On her upcoming projects, Priyanka Chopra Jonas is set to reprise her role as Nadia Sinh in the second season of Citadel, currently filming alongside Richard Madden. Meanwhile, the Indian adaptation, Citadel: Honey Bunny, will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on November 7, 2024, featuring Varun Dhawan and Samantha Ruth Prabhu in lead roles.
As for Chopra’s future projects, she has wrapped filming for several films, including The Bluff and Heads of State, and is in discussions for the highly anticipated Jee Le Zara with Farhan Akhtar, co-starring Alia Bhatt and Katrina Kaif.
