Martin Scorsese to Direct What Happens at Night With Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence
Apple Original Films and Studiocanal back the haunting adaptation of Peter Cameron’s novel, with filming expected to begin in early 2026.

Martin Scorsese has locked in his next project, and it’s shaping up to be a major cinematic event. The legendary filmmaker will direct an adaptation of Peter Cameron’s eerie novel What Happens at Night, with Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence taking the lead roles. Apple Original Films is in talks to finance and produce the project alongside Studiocanal, which originally developed the script. Patrick Marber, acclaimed for works like Closer, has penned the screenplay.
The story follows an American couple who travel to a snowy, remote European town to adopt a child. The wife, battling a serious illness, fears her condition could prevent them from being approved, while the husband struggles with his own doubts. They check into a cavernous, nearly deserted hotel where they encounter a series of strange and unsettling figures, including a flamboyant singer, a sinister businessman, and a charismatic faith healer. As they fight to claim their baby, the boundaries between reality and illusion blur, forcing them to confront the fragility of their marriage and their own identities.
The film reunites Scorsese and DiCaprio for their seventh collaboration, following acclaimed projects like The Wolf of Wall Street and Killers of the Flower Moon. For Lawrence, this marks her first time working directly under Scorsese’s direction, though he previously produced her film Die, My Love. With three Academy Award winners leading the production and a surreal, haunting story at its core, What Happens at Night is already one of the most anticipated films of the coming years.
