Manoj Bajpayee: From Small Roles to 100 Films and a Legacy That Changed “The Family Man”

How Raj & DK reshaped the character of Srikant Tiwari to fit Manoj Bajpayee, whose journey from a small Bihar village to Bollywood stardom now spans over 100 films.

Manoj Bajpayee’s road to becoming a National Award-winning actor and Padma Shri honoree was anything but smooth. From humble beginnings with minor roles to iconic performances, Bajpayee has proven himself a force in Indian cinema. His portrayal of Srikant Tiwari in The Family Man earned him widespread acclaim, but few know that the role wasn’t initially crafted with him in mind.

In a conversation with Siddharth Kannan on YouTube, filmmakers Raj & DK revealed that they typically avoid writing roles with specific actors in mind. They had originally envisioned a different version of Srikant Tiwari while developing The Family Man and were brainstorming suitable actors for the part. Manoj Bajpayee’s name surfaced unexpectedly, despite neither Raj nor DK knowing him personally at the time.

Beyond his memorable performance in The Family Man, Bajpayee recently achieved another milestone — completing 100 films with his 2024 release Bhaiyya Ji. During an interview at Pinkvilla Masterclass, he shared that it was director Apoorv Singh Karki who first brought this achievement to his attention.

“He told me, ‘Sir, do you know you’ve completed 100 films?’ and I was taken by surprise,” Bajpayee said. Reflecting on his journey, he described the accomplishment as a “miracle.” “When I first came to Mumbai, I didn’t think I’d make even 10 films, and now here I am with 100,” he added.

Bajpayee also spoke about the moment he realized acting was his true calling. Growing up in Bettiah, a small village in Bihar, he credited his father as his first inspiration. “My father was a movie buff. He would travel from our village to nearby towns just to catch a film at one of the three theaters,” the actor reminisced.

Apart from The Family Man, Bajpayee has kept audiences hooked with his recent role in Killer Soup alongside Konkona Sen Sharma, further cementing his reputation as one of the most versatile actors in the industry.
