Manisha Koirala Reflects on Burnout and Rediscovering Her Passion for Acting

Once Bored of Acting, the Iconic 90s Star Shares How Veteran Actress Dimple Kapadia’s Advice Helped Her See Her Craft in a New Light

Manisha Koirala, a beloved star of the 90s known for her talent, beauty, and charm, recently made a return to the screen with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar. In a candid conversation, Koirala opened up about a time in her career when she felt unfulfilled and uninterested in acting. During that period, a conversation with Dimple Kapadia, who was filming with her at the time, provided unexpected insight.

Recalling the conversation, Koirala shared with ANI that she confided in Kapadia, expressing her feelings of boredom with the acting profession. “I told her, ‘I am bored of acting,’” Koirala explained. Kapadia responded with words that stuck with her, saying, “You better enjoy it because this is not going to last forever.” At the time, Koirala couldn’t relate to Kapadia’s words, admitting her inner response was, “What is she even saying? Can’t she understand I am bored?”

Years later, the Dil Se actress began to understand the wisdom behind Kapadia’s advice. Reflecting on that phase, Koirala explained that her demanding schedule, which included up to three different movie shoots in a single day, had left her exhausted and uninspired. With no weekend breaks and days that often began with hours in makeup, the unrelenting routine took a toll, leading to burnout.

Having debuted in Bollywood with Saudagar in 1992, Koirala has delivered numerous memorable performances in films such as Khamoshi: The Musical, Company, 1942: A Love Story, and Akele Hum Akele Tum. However, after being diagnosed with cancer in 2012, Koirala took a necessary hiatus to focus on her health. After her recovery, she made a remarkable return to the screen, with her portrayal of Nargis Dutt in Sanju, alongside Ranbir Kapoor, earning widespread praise.

Today, Koirala’s return to cinema is a testament to her resilience and renewed passion for her craft.
