Malaika Arora Says She Finally Felt Free After Learning to Stop Justifying Herself
Bollywood icon reflects on years of criticism over her choices — in career, fashion and relationships — and how she embraced them all as part of her own narrative.

Malaika Arora, one of Bollywood’s most glamorous and influential personalities, has been a part of the film industry for over three decades. Known for delivering some of the most iconic songs and appearances on screen, she has also lived much of her personal life under public scrutiny. From her divorce with Arbaaz Khan to her relationship and later breakup with Arjun Kapoor, and even the tragic loss of her father, Malaika has faced both admiration and harsh judgment throughout her journey.
In a recent conversation, Malaika admitted that being constantly judged took a toll on her. “It was tough because people love to tell you what you should or shouldn’t be. I was judged for my career, my clothes, my relationships — you name it,” she said. However, she shared that everything changed the moment she stopped explaining herself to others. “The day I stopped explaining myself was the day I felt free. My biggest takeaway? The only narrative that matters is the one you write for yourself.”
Over the years, Malaika has also been labeled as “too bold” or “too outspoken.” Instead of being weighed down by these criticisms, she now chooses to embrace them. “I wear it like a crown now. If I’m ‘too much’ for someone, they’re probably not enough for me,” she declared, turning criticism into empowerment.
Speaking candidly about her marriage with Arbaaz Khan, Malaika revealed that although she once hoped it would last forever, things didn’t work out despite efforts from both sides. She emphasized that her decision to move on was about prioritizing her own happiness. “At that point, I needed to be happy before trying to make anybody else happy; I was not happy,” she explained.
Despite the challenges, Malaika continues to inspire with her confidence, resilience, and unapologetic approach to life. While she admits she still faces moments of self-doubt, she chooses to treat herself with kindness and compassion rather than judgment — a philosophy that resonates deeply with many who admire her journey.
