Lizzy Caplan Reflects on Abandoned ‘Gambit’ Film with Channing Tatum

The actress shares insights into the planned screwball romantic comedy that was shelved after the Disney-Fox merger.

In a recent discussion, Lizzy Caplan opened up about the canceled ‘Gambit’ movie, in which she was slated to star alongside Channing Tatum. The project, envisioned as a 1930s-style screwball romantic comedy within the X-Men universe, faced numerous challenges, including multiple director changes and script rewrites.

Despite reaching advanced stages of pre-production, the film was ultimately shelved following the Disney-Fox merger in 2019. Caplan expressed her disappointment, noting the uniqueness of the concept and the rarity of such projects being canceled.

Tatum, who had been deeply invested in portraying the New Orleans-based mutant Gambit, described the cancellation as a significant letdown. However, he eventually brought the character to life in the 2024 film ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ receiving acclaim for his performance. Reflecting on the experience, Caplan acknowledged the potential of the project but also felt a sense of relief at avoiding the pressures associated with major Marvel productions.
