Kirti Kulhari Embraces Spoof Comedy in ‘Badass Ravi Kumar’ to Challenge Personal and Audience Perceptions

The acclaimed actress steps out of her comfort zone, confronting unexpected trolling while redefining her artistic boundaries.

Kirti Kulhari, celebrated for her powerful roles in films such as Pink (2016), Uri (2019), and Indu Sarkar (2017), has taken an unexpected turn in her career by starring in the spoof action comedy Badass Ravi Kumar. Directed by Keith Gomes and featuring actor-musician Himesh Reshammiya, the film marks a significant departure from Kulhari’s typical serious and performance-driven projects.

In a recent interview, Kulhari revealed her initial surprise when approached for the role. “I was shocked. But Himesh told me, ‘I need an actor for this role.’ I was flattered that he thought of me for his film,” she shared. Interestingly, her short bob hairstyle also influenced her casting, with Reshammiya expressing, “I really like your hairstyle. I want that look for the part.”

Embracing this opportunity, Kulhari viewed the film as a chance to break free from the confines of her established image. “I am seen as a serious actor. But I realized that I didn’t want any strict notions about me, not just from the audience but also myself. I wanted to shatter any judgment I harbored for spoof films. I also wanted to break the perception I had of myself as an actor,” she explained.

Despite anticipating mixed reactions, Kulhari did not foresee the extent of the trolling she would face following the film’s trailer release. “This is the first time in my career that I have been trolled. People have written, ‘Aisi bhi kya majboori thi [that you had to do this film]?’” she noted. Nevertheless, the criticism did not deter her, and she remains proud of stepping out of her comfort zone.

By taking on this unconventional role, Kulhari aims to challenge both her own and the audience’s perceptions, demonstrating her versatility and commitment to exploring diverse facets of her craft.
