Kiran Rao Returns with Laapataa Ladies: A Quirky Comedy Set to Release on January 5th, 2024

After Dhobi Ghat in 2011, the filmmaker, Kiran Rao, vanished without a trace. Now you know where she went. The social comedy Laapataa Ladies, which she will next direct, will debut on January 5th, 2024. On Friday, Aamir Khan Productions released the movie’s teaser, in which men in rural India are seen calling the police to report that their new brides had “laapataa” (lost).

In the teaser, two men are seen complaining to the police about their new brides getting lost when they were on the same train in a rural area of India. A humorous image of the bride from the wedding day, with her face obscured by the shadi ka joda (wedding dress), is shown to the groom when actor Ravi Kishan, who portrays a constable, asks one of the grooms whether he has a picture of the bride. In fact, neither bride’s face is shown at all in the teaser, giving the audience a true sense of their laapataa status.

The movie’s official summary reads as follows, “Set in 2001, somewhere in rural India, LOST LADIES is about the delightful adventures of two young brides who get accidentally swapped on a train. In the ensuing chaos, they each encounter a host of colourful characters, resulting in hilarious and unexpected consequences. The young lost ladies must take it upon themselves to venture on an endearing journey: one of immense discovery about themselves and womanhood; and the heartwarming and heartbreaking nature of life itself.”

Aamir and Kiran, Jio Studios, and the movie Laapataa Ladies are co-producers. The screenplay for the original Biplab Goswami story was written by Sneha Desai. Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, and Chhaya Kadam also appear in the movie..
